When successful professionals bring the expertise of their field to work for them in public office transformation can happen. In the shadows of some of the largest revolutions in business and public policy were these people acting as agents of change.
In 1964 when the Surgeon General, Luther Terry, a physician by trade, concluded reports that smoking causes lung cancer in men, it began the reformation of a billion-dollar tobacco industry. Cigarette consumption dropped by 20% in the three months after the report, cigarette television and radio ads were banned in 1971 and in 1998 the tobacco industry agreed in a $206 billion settlement due to the public health costs of smoking, an unparalleled transfer of wealth from a private company to the government. More importantly, it began to change how we think about smoking and protected the public from a growing cancer epidemic.
I admire Terry Luther and other agents of change as I run for Commissioner of the Revenue, and intend to be the agent of change that our Newport News commerce community needs.
I have a vision and the determination to transform the Revenue office for greater success.
With my 3-tier strategy (1. improving efficiency, 2. renewing our administration and 3. expanding revenue opportunities) as Commissioner of the Revenue, I will make this office what the citizens of Newport News need it to be. I will offer a zeal for the needs of our residents and businesses such that they have the information they need to make effective decisions, receive quick and speedy service, and establish a fruitful relationship with the servants in office that are here to help them thrive.
I believe the citizens of Newport News are entitled to an agent of change who wants our community to experience more success and generate further growth with individuals like myself in place to engineer these results.
For nearly 20 years, as a proud resident of Newport News, I have been serving the public, private and non-profit sectors.
With your vote on June 13th, allow me to utilize my diverse professional background, including serving at the Commissioner of the Revenue’s office, and my extensive education to manage the annual assessment of 23 different taxes that result in over $145 million in revenue and fund services to our community.
