The Boyle Link Point - The Digital Marketplace: What it Means to Newport News

25 years ago, on August 6, 1991, the world-wide web went live. The birth and evolution of the internet has exposed billions of individuals to infinite opportunities, and just as many threats.

Today, the internet serves as a social utility, transforming the way we connect with others and the way we do business. Facebook, the largest social platform on the internet, has 1.94 billion active users and 1.28 billion daily users on average according to their recent reports. Furthermore, 85.8% of these users are outside of the United States and Canada.

Amazon’s model of internet sales together with a robust distribution network has far outpaced sales as compared to even the biggest brick and mortar institution.

So, what does this mean for our Newport News Community?

1. Unlimited Potential.

It means our Newport News city limits will not limit the reach of even our smallest businesses to connect with the consumers and suppliers they need to be successful.

2. Global Impact.

It means that our community can have an impact on a global scale with the direct to consumer channels the digital marketplace offers.

3. Local Growth and Development.

The digital marketplace offers a myriad of tools for small business owners and improves the efficiency with which they do business even on the local retail face-to-face level.

The opportunities are truly unprecedented.

As Commissioner of the Revenue for Newport News, I will bridge the gap between our business owners and the knowledge they need to remain competitive in the marketplace and to be aligned as operating entities of commerce according to the code of Virginia Taxation and Licensing ordinances.

As a business owner myself, I understand the importance of having the tools I need and an office in place that supports my entrepreneurial vigor. With my experience working in the Commissioner of the Revenue's office, I know what it takes and what it looks like internally to make this happen.

With your support on June 13th, we can start working towards building a construct and community that can embrace all the opportunities of the digital world while protecting and sustaining our longstanding heritage of Newport News VA.
